Jungleonhellshighway’s Netflix over Winter Break Boredom Viewing
Movie: Ashura [no Hitomi]
My rating: 3/5
I was originally drawn tot his film because of its title. Having studied premodern Japanese literature, I got quite into the 6 Realms of Existence, particularly the Warrior Demon plain. I thought that this film would tie heavily back into that. But upon viewing ten minutes through, it wasn’t quite what I expected. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it. Pretty early on it becomes clear that it is a movie adaptation of a play, which is fine, but unless the viewer is well aware of how those plays works you can get lost. I also haven’t read this Nakashima play, so I cannot really judge how well the film version works - hence why I give it a 3 out of 5. But I would recommend it to someone who is interested in Japanese culture. It’s definitely a fun film… or at least I thought so.
